How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Print the BOL as: Roofing, steel, corrugated, asphalt or pitch coated, in packages — NMFC 170210, Class 65, non-hazardous, to avoid reclass fees.
  2. Palletize bundles flat with full-length skids; add edge protectors and two to three steel or heavy poly bands, then stretch-wrap to protect the coating.
  3. Cap the top and bottom with plywood or heavy corrugate and prevent overhang; mark Do Not Top Load and block to stop shifting in transit.
  4. Keep bundles dry and out of extreme heat; asphalt/pitch coatings can soften, so request inside trailer space and minimize summer dwell time.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 65 means no density calculation, enabling faster, accurate quotes.
  • Lower class than many building sheets helps reduce LTL rates and total landed cost.
  • Correct NMFC on paperwork cuts inspections, reclassifications, and surprise charges.
  • Stronger packaging lowers damage claims, keeping roof projects on schedule and budget.
