How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Book LTL at Class 70 using NMFC 170310 and declare packaging as packages (e.g., boxed rolls or tight shrink-wrapped bundles with corner boards).
- Stiffen and protect roll cores and edges; add edge guards and pallet strapping. Example: two 36-inch rolls per carton, strapped to a 40x48 pallet.
- Keep the product dry and out of heat; asphalt-saturated felt softens in hot trailers. Avoid top-stacking heavy freight that could crush or crease the foil.
- Prevent scuffing and tears on the foil face with slip sheets between layers, and request no-clamp handling where possible.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 70 with no density calculation, simplifying quotes and audits.
- Lower reclass risk when listed as packaged asphalt felt with aluminum foil under the precise NMFC item.
- Fewer damage claims by following packaging cues specific to foil-faced roofing felt (edge, core, and moisture protection).
- Broader carrier availability and no hazmat fees since the commodity is non-hazardous.
