How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select NMFC 170410 and Class 77.5 when aluminum roofing shingles are packed in sealed boxes or rigid crates; verify any special rules in Note 170412.
- Palletize boxed shingles with no overhang on 48x40 or 42x42 pallets, add corner guards, strap with poly banding, and cap with cardboard to prevent strap marks.
- For crated shipments to jobsites, build skids with 4‑way forklift entry, mark lift points and center of gravity, and weather-wrap if exposure is likely during cross-dock moves.
- Protect against dents and edge curl using corrugated pads between layers; limit stack height if top-load strength is low and apply “Do Not Double Stack” labels when appropriate.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL pricing at Class 77.5 helps quote roofing deliveries with fewer surprises than density-based ratings.
- Accurate item selection and approved packaging reduce reclass and rebill risk, safeguarding margins on competitive construction bids.
- Durable boxing or crating lowers damage claims on dent-prone aluminum, preserving finish quality for premium roof installs.
- Clear paperwork (e.g., “Aluminum shingles, boxed, NMFC 170410, Class 77.5, non-hazmat”) speeds tendering and improves terminal handling.
