How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 170570, Class 55 on the BOL; density is not required when the siding is shipped in packages.
- Bundle panels flat on a 48x40 pallet with corner protectors, slip sheets, and stretch wrap to keep roofing granules from scuffing adjacent bundles.
- Use wide nylon or steel bands with edge guards; avoid fork tine pinch by using full-length fork extensions when lifting long bundles.
- Keep dry before pickup and cover with a pallet cap in rainy or hot conditions; asphalt/resin faces can soften or stick without a separator.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 rating simplifies quotes and reduces reclass fees versus density-based commodities.
- Package-defined eligibility means predictable access to LTL networks and fewer hazmat surcharges.
- Damage reduction from proper bundling lowers claim costs on granule-faced edges and corners.
- Standard 48x40 footprints optimize cube and avoid oversize penalties, improving freight rates across lanes.
