How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Pack tiles in tight, robust cartons or securely banded bundles; fill voids so pieces cannot rub and chip during LTL transit.
  2. Use the NMFC description on the BOL: “Tile, roofing, clay, concrete or earthen, NOI, in packages” and note piece and package counts for quick inspections.
  3. Build square, stable stacks; use corner boards and top caps to spread load, and mark Do Not Top Load if cartons could crush.
  4. Weatherproof outer wrap for rain exposure at cross-docks and jobsites; moisture weakens cartons and can stain earthen tiles.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 55 rating provides predictable LTL pricing and reduces reclass or reweigh surprises.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and simplifies accessorial planning for construction deliveries.
  • Stronger packaging minimizes breakage on brittle clay and concrete tiles, cutting claims and replacement delays.
  • Clear NOI description speeds carrier inspections and improves dock flow for time-sensitive roofing projects.
