How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 171330 and Class 55 on the bill of lading, and note contents as rosin paste in drums (non-hazardous).
- Palletize drums upright, use drum rings and two steel bands, add corner boards, and absorbent pads under bungs to prevent seepage.
- Avoid extreme heat during transit; warm trailers can thin the paste and weep at closures. In winter, allow extra time for viscous product to unload.
- Request proper handling gear at pickup/delivery (drum truck, liftgate if no dock) and avoid double-stacking unless drums are specifically rated.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Single fixed Class 55 reduces reclass risk and surprise adjustments, enabling predictable LTL quotes.
- Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and eliminates hazmat surcharges and paperwork.
- Drum packaging improves handling efficiency and lowers damage potential, reducing OS&D claims.
- Commodity-level clarity speeds tendering and routing, cutting time-to-ship for industrial supply chains.
