How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Identify the form and package: spooled rovings, boxed yarn, or bagged chopped strand. All move as packages at Class 70; print NMFC 171400 on the BOL.
  2. Protect spools from unraveling and core crush: tape fiber ends, insert core plugs, add corner boards and top sheets, then stretch-wrap tightly to the pallet.
  3. Control dust and moisture for chopped strand: use poly liners inside cartons or bags, keep pallets fully shrink-wrapped, and cover if docks are wet or humid.
  4. Plan stable loads: avoid pallet overhang, interlock-stack cartons within manufacturer limits, and apply two polyester bands per pallet for LTL handling.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable rating: fixed Class 70 eliminates density checks, speeding quotes and reducing reclass fees.
  • Lower compliance burden: fiberglass materials are non-hazardous, avoiding hazmat surcharges and paperwork delays.
  • Reduced claims: abrasion- and moisture-aware packaging minimizes unraveling, contamination, and crushed cores.
  • Improved rate leverage: tidy, palletized packages cube well for LTL, supporting better utilization and sharper freight rates.
