How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Specify the exact rubber form on your BOL—bales, sheets, rolls, or cut pieces—and clearly note “not foam/cellular/expanded/sponge” to avoid misclassification.
- Palletize dense loads with edge protectors, banding, and stretch wrap; add slip-sheets or liners to prevent carbon black transfer to adjacent freight. Example: 48x40 pallet, 2,000 lb of sheets, wrapped and banded.
- Shield from ozone, UV, and heat during transit and storage by using opaque wrap or covers; avoid co-loading near solvents or oils that can stain or degrade rubber surfaces.
- Plan for weight concentration: verify forklift capacity, label heavy pallets, and use blocking to prevent shifting. If deformation is a risk, mark pallets Do Not Top-Stack.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate commodity detail for NMFC 171600 reduces reclass and inspection fees, keeping LTL invoices predictable.
- Non-hazardous materials streamline carrier acceptance and minimize accessorial delays tied to special handling.
- Contamination control (liners, wrap, edge protection) cuts surface-damage claims on high-value sheets and rolls.
- Dense, compact packing of rubber bales increases trailer utilization, lowering cost per pound and improving rate negotiations.
