Notes
Note 171622: NOTE-Shipper must certify on shipping orders and bills of lading at time of shipment the actual value per pound of the property or the value group embracing the actual value per pound of the property. If the shipper fails to so certify the actual value, shipment will not be accepted, but if the shipment is inadvertently accepted, charges will initially be assessed on the basis of the class for the highest valuation provided. Upon proof of lower actual value, freight charges will be adjusted accordingly.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Seal product in leakproof inner containers (cans, pouches, or jugs), line each box with a poly bag, and fill voids so viscous liquids cannot shift or rupture.
- Add handling notes on labels and BOL: "Keep Upright" and "Protect From Freezing" when needed; request the accessorial in winter lanes to prevent cold damage.
- Describe the freight precisely on paperwork: "Coatings or Dispersions, silicone rubber, liquid/paste/semisolid — boxed; non-hazardous," and include an SDS for quick acceptance.
- Palletize square, strap and stretch-wrap, use absorbent pads for contingency, and avoid overhang so cartons stack safely without leak or crush claims.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and reduces compliance overhead for training, placarding, and documentation.
- Cartonized packaging fits standard pallets, improving cube efficiency and enabling more predictable LTL pricing and capacity.
- Clear NMFC-aligned descriptions lower reclass and reweigh risk, cutting rebill disputes and speeding invoice approval.
- Temperature and leak-prevention steps reduce scrap, cleanup fees, and production downtime for coatings and molding operations.
