How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose packaging that matches the rule: ship in tight‑head plastic drums or place sealed inner containers (e.g., jerricans) inside strong boxes with liners and absorbent pads for leak control.
- Palletize for stability. Set drums upright on 48x40 pallets, use bands and stretch wrap, and add corner boards; flag “Do Not Top Load” if your drums are lightweight or partially filled to prevent bulging.
- Protect from temperature swings. Mark cartons and drums “Do Not Freeze”; request freeze protection in winter lanes and keep out of direct sun to avoid coagulation and skin formation.
- Document clearly on the BOL: “NMFC 171720 – Latex, liquid, Class 60.” Note non-hazardous status and include an SDS if your customer requires one; no density entry is needed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 60 rating helps secure lower LTL pricing compared to higher classes, cutting per‑pallet costs for routine latex replenishments.
- Fixed class with no density factor speeds quotes and reduces reweigh/reclass fees, improving rate accuracy and tender acceptance.
- Non-hazardous designation avoids hazmat surcharges and specialized paperwork, streamlining scheduling and driver acceptance.
- Flexible packaging—drums or boxed inner containers—lets you optimize cube and handling, lowering damage risk and claim exposure when packed as specified.
