How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the sand is core or shell type with no more than 5% phenolic resin and pack only in five-ply paper bags or drums to stay within this NMFC.
- For bagged loads, palletize tight rows (e.g., 40–60 x 50 lb bags), add a moisture barrier sheet, and stretch-wrap to control dust and prevent bag scuffing.
- For drums, use secure ring closures, band to pallets, and block and brace to avoid rolling; keep away from food goods to prevent cross-contamination from fines.
- On the BOL, list “Sand, foundry core/shell, NMFC 172370, Class 50, non-hazardous” and photograph packaging before tender to avoid reclass or spill claims.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 50 provides favorable LTL pricing for dense mineral commodities, lowering cost per pound on routine core room replenishments.
- Clear packaging rules (five-ply bags or drums) reduce inspection delays, reclass fees, and cleanup charges from torn bags or unlined containers.
- Consistent NMFC mapping speeds quoting, audits, and dispute resolution with carriers and 3PLs, improving billing accuracy.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and allows easier consolidation with other industrial materials for better capacity and transit times.
