NMFC Description Class

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the item fits: textile printing screens with the print surface shielded by fiberboard, shipped as packaged pieces. Keep the fiberboard covering the mesh face and add corner/edge guards.
  2. Pack flat in a rigid carton or strapped bundle on a pallet. Interleave fiberboard between multiple frames (e.g., 23x31 aluminum screens) and shrink-wrap to prevent abrasion and shifting.
  3. On the BOL, note NMFC 172540 and packaging as packages. Mark Fragile—Screen Faces and Do Not Stack, and request limited handling or top-load when available.
  4. Choose LTL carriers comfortable with delicate, low-weight/high-cube freight. Avoid overhang on pallets to reduce fork-tip damage and claim risk.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate Class 400 assignment avoids reclass charges and disputes, protecting margins on repeat print-shop shipments.
  • Fixed class (no density required) speeds rating and quoting, enabling faster turnarounds for rush screen orders.
  • Fiberboard face protection and proper bundling reduce mesh damage, lowering remake costs and production downtime.
  • Flat, well-secured palletization curbs OS&D claims and ancillary fees, improving total landed cost predictability.
