How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- On the BOL, cite: “NMFC 174145, Channels or Fasciae, Venetian Blind, Steel, painted or not, punched or not,” and apply Class 50 for all versions.
- For stock lengths, bundle channels with edge guards, add VCI wrap for bare steel, then place in a long box or a wooden crate to prevent bowing.
- For cut-to-size fasciae, separate painted pieces with paper or foam sheets, bag small parts, and pack tightly in cartons to stop rub and rattle; mark “Sharp Edges.”
- Palletize long boxes or crates lengthwise; use 2–3 steel or poly straps and corner protectors, and add “Do Not Stack” if thin-gauge parts are prone to bending.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 rating helps secure lower LTL rates and predictable quotes compared to density-based items.
- Classification covers painted/unpainted and punched/plain pieces in boxes or crates, reducing reclass disputes and inspection fees.
- Flexibility to ship in cartons or crates lets you scale packaging to order size, cutting material costs while limiting transit damage.
- Non-hazardous status and a single NMFC number streamline paperwork, speeding dock turns and reducing accessorial risk.
