How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack coiled slat stock in rigid boxes or crates, or wrap and band to 4‑way pallets; use edge protectors so the crown curvature isn’t crushed.
- Orient coils to prevent rolling and strap at least twice with 2 in banding; place slip sheets between layers and cap with a top board for even pressure.
- Document material and finish clearly (aluminum, steel, or polymer; painted or plain), include coil count and approximate piece or bundle weights for smooth LTL quoting.
- If palletizing, keep zero overhang on a 48×40 skid, mark fragile surfaces, and note “Do Not Stack” when crates aren’t stack‑rated to avoid compression damage.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Damage reduction: Proper coil bracing and crown protection prevent bends and scuffs, cutting claims and reship costs.
- Faster handling: Pallet‑ready, forklift‑safe freight shortens dwell time at terminals and reduces special handling fees.
- Clearer billing: Descriptions that mirror NMFC wording lower reclass or inspection risk and keep invoices predictable.
- Better cube efficiency: Coiled slat stock uses space efficiently, improving LTL rate eligibility and linehaul utilization.
