How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Ship only blank, one-piece steel sign panels—no graphics or messages—to remain under NMFC 174410; printed signs may classify differently.
  2. For packaged shipments, align edges, interleave painted faces with non-abrasive sheets, add rigid top/bottom pads, and band to a pallet with no overhang.
  3. For loose moves, tightly band panels into bundles, block/brace to prevent sliding, and cap the bundle to protect from fork pressure; follow NMFC notes for loose handling.
  4. Mark as “Steel Sign Blanks—One Piece” and reference NMFC 174410; skip density entry since Class 65 is fixed. Ideal for municipalities and sign fabricators sending street-sign blanks.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 65 simplifies rating and cuts reclass risk, improving quote accuracy and budgeting for sign shops and distributors.
  • Option to ship packaged or loose lets you balance protection and cost—bundling can reduce crating labor while still controlling damage.
  • Proper edge protection and interleaving minimize paint scratches and bend claims, lowering replacement costs and delivery delays.
  • Predictable classification supports carrier contract negotiations and multi-stop LTL planning, and consolidating mixed panel sizes on one skid reduces minimum charges.
