How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density from total weight and cubic feet; nest pails, tubs, or bowls when possible to raise density and improve rating.
- Pack in strong boxes or crates with edge guards and dividers; use corner protection for refrigerator panels and partitions for vases or enameled dishes.
- For portable fuel cans, ship empty and vapor-purged with caps secured and “EMPTY” markings per carrier rules, then box and palletize to prevent movement.
- Match specific notes when applicable (e.g., carbonated beverage containers or cans NOI) to avoid reclass; otherwise use 175120 for general sheet steel articles.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-based pricing rewards compact packing and nesting, often lowering freight class and cutting LTL rates.
- Purpose-built boxing or crating reduces scuffs on steel edges and enamel, minimizing OS&D claims and chargebacks.
- Accurate NMFC selection and note usage prevent costly reclassifications, inspections, and rebills.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines tendering and broadens carrier options for faster transit planning.
