How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match your shipment to the proper shells description (natural shells, decorative pieces, or assortments) and note whether items are raw or cleaned/processed.
- Bag small shells before boxing; use dividers and foam or paper to cushion fragile edges. Double‑wall cartons stop crushing of heavier lots.
- Palletize gently: corner boards, a top cap, and stretch wrap with light tension. Mark Fragile—Shells and This Side Up to reduce handling impacts.
- Document net weight, piece count, and packaging type. Add Non‑Hazardous—Natural Shells on the BOL, and check any CITES/APHIS restrictions for species.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fewer damage claims on brittle shells through right-size packaging and controlled pallet tension.
- Rate stability by declaring Class N/A with clear descriptors, reducing reclass fees and inspection delays.
- Lower labor at both ends by pre-bagging small pieces and using labeled inner packs for quick counts.
- Better cube utilization with nested containers and dividers, trimming freight charges on LTL lanes.
