How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the commodity: shoe polishers with a wool buffer, boxed individually. Do not include liquid polish in the same carton to avoid reclass or damage.
- Cover the wool head to prevent matting and lint transfer, then block and brace the motor housing so the shaft cannot shift during transit.
- Print the BOL to show “NMFC 175700, Class 85, Boxed” and match it on carton labels to reduce inspection delays or reclassifications.
- For multiple units, place sealed boxes on a 40x48 pallet, band and stretch-wrap with a top sheet, and keep heavy items off the buffer end.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs with a fixed Class 85—no density calculation reduces reclass exposure and simplifies rating.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and documentation, speeding tender and pickup.
- Boxed packaging streamlines dock handling and lowers claim risk for delicate wool buffers.
- Clear NMFC alignment shortens quote cycles, improving procurement turnaround and inventory availability for retailers and service shops.
