How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Calculate density per Item 170: weigh each box and divide by its cubic feet (L x W x H ÷ 1728). Example: 30 lb in a 24x16x16 box ≈ 8.4 pcf, likely mid-range class.
  2. Right-size boxes and compress husks to raise pcf. Use a poly liner to control dust and moisture, but avoid excess void fill that lowers density (and raises class).
  3. When unitizing boxes on a pallet, treat the stretch-wrapped unit as one handling piece for density. If shipping loose boxes, use the density of each box, not an average.
  4. Note thirteen density tiers from Class 50–400 for this item. Choose the correct tier before quoting to avoid reclass and inspection delays.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Optimize costs by increasing box density to land in lower classes, reducing LTL rates on bulky, lightweight organic material.
  • Accurate density declarations prevent reweigh/reclass fees and speed up billing, improving quote-to-invoice predictability.
  • Organic, non-hazardous commodity broadens carrier options and simplifies tendering—fewer restrictions, more competitive bids.
  • Durable, moisture-controlled packaging reduces damage and contamination risk, lowering claim rates and protecting margins.
