How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density per Item 170: weigh each box and divide by its cubic feet (L x W x H ÷ 1728). Example: 30 lb in a 24x16x16 box ≈ 8.4 pcf, likely mid-range class.
- Right-size boxes and compress husks to raise pcf. Use a poly liner to control dust and moisture, but avoid excess void fill that lowers density (and raises class).
- When unitizing boxes on a pallet, treat the stretch-wrapped unit as one handling piece for density. If shipping loose boxes, use the density of each box, not an average.
- Note thirteen density tiers from Class 50–400 for this item. Choose the correct tier before quoting to avoid reclass and inspection delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Optimize costs by increasing box density to land in lower classes, reducing LTL rates on bulky, lightweight organic material.
- Accurate density declarations prevent reweigh/reclass fees and speed up billing, improving quote-to-invoice predictability.
- Organic, non-hazardous commodity broadens carrier options and simplifies tendering—fewer restrictions, more competitive bids.
- Durable, moisture-controlled packaging reduces damage and contamination risk, lowering claim rates and protecting margins.
