How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Immobilize indicator tubes and float assemblies with dense foam and corner blocking; for single units, use a double-wall box with dividers to prevent scuffing.
- Label cartons clearly: “Non-Electric Fuel Tank Signals” and “Fragile—Calibration Parts.” Include a contents sheet for gaskets, caps, and rods to speed receiving checks.
- Match packaging to the job: wood crate for multi-unit fleet or terminal deliveries; 275# double-wall corrugated box for single replacements to marine or fuel station sites.
- Rate and book at Class 85—no density needed. Note the outer pack (box or crate) and piece count on the BOL to avoid inspection disputes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 85 rating reduces reclass penalties and keeps lane pricing stable.
- Non-hazardous, non-electric components bypass battery and hazmat add-ons, easing carrier acceptance.
- Flexible box-or-crate options let you right-size packing, cutting materials and dimensional weight charges.
- Faster quoting and order turnaround since density data isn’t required for this item.
