How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the commodity is non-lighted. If the sign includes LEDs or any light source, review related NMFC notes (items 175902/175903) instead of item 175900.
  2. For boxed flat panels or sign blanks, interleaf with foam or kraft, add corner/edge protectors, and band to a pallet to prevent edge creases. Example: stack 24×36 aluminum signs with slip sheets.
  3. Crate oversized or multi-panel assemblies; block and brace inside the crate, bag and secure mounting hardware, and stencil “Do Not Fork Through.” Avoid pallet overhang.
  4. On the BOL, describe as “non-lighted road/street signs in boxes/crates – NMFC 175900,” include piece count, and attach packing photos when routing via carriers handling fragile flats.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Class 70–85 provides moderate rating options, balancing cost with protection for varying sign sizes and packaging choices.
  • Non-hazardous status streamlines tendering, eliminates hazmat surcharges, and shortens pickup-to-delivery cycles.
  • Damage prevention measures protect reflective faces and edges, cutting claim risk and avoiding costly reships and delays.
  • Correct use of NMFC 175900 reduces reclass fees, tightens quote accuracy for municipal and contractor projects, and improves budget predictability.
