How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List on the BOL as “Silica, colloidal, liquid, in drums or in containers in boxes — NMFC 176325 — Class 55 — Non-hazardous” to prevent reclass.
- For drums: tighten bungs/rings, add tamper seals, and place leak-absorbent pads under lids. For boxed containers: use double‑wall cartons with plastic liners and “This Side Up” arrows.
- Palletize tightly: no overhang, use corner boards, stretch‑wrap to the deck, and add two bands around drums or the master carton to resist slosh movement.
- Request Protect From Freezing in cold weather and note accessorials (liftgate, limited access) when shipping heavy drums to labs, plants, or job sites.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 55 keeps LTL costs lower versus higher chemical classes, improving per-shipment economics.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and expands carrier options for faster tendering.
- Simple, non-density classification reduces reclass and rebill risk, stabilizing your landed cost.
- Standard drum or boxed-container packaging lowers damage exposure and claim frequency.
