How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Mark the BOL with NMFC 176400 and Class 50, and specify the package type used (bags, boxes, or drums). Example: 40x48 pallet, 50‑lb bags, stretch-wrapped with a top sheet.
- Choose rugged containment to resist abrasion: multiwall bags with liners, fiber/steel drums with ring closures, or corrugated boxes with interior liners. Add corner boards before stretch wrap.
- Control dust and protect nearby freight by using sealed liners, full pallet stretch wrap, and a slip sheet on the pallet deck. Avoid co-loading next to delicate electronics or finished surfaces.
- Keep product dry to prevent caking and handling issues; use covered equipment and note “Keep Dry.” Limit stack height on pallets and verify pallet strength for heavy, dense loads.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 enables predictable LTL pricing on a dense, rugged commodity, often lowering base rates versus higher classes.
- Single-line NMFC with no density break minimizes reclass disputes, cutting accessorials, delays, and post-shipment billing surprises.
- Accepts common industrial packaging (bags, boxes, drums), simplifying procurement across suppliers and reducing repack costs.
- Better containment and palletization reduce product loss and cross-contamination, protecting material quality for foundry and refractory workflows.
