(Classes herein based on released value have been authorized by the Interstate Commerce Commission in Released Rates Order MC No. 1 of January 16, 1936, as amended October 20, 1948, August 9, 1966, October 7, 1966, October 12, 1970 and March 31, 1980.)
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match the exact form to the listing: raw, spun, schappe, or thrown (Organzine, Singles, Tram, Warp) and note the pack style—bags, boxes, bales, or beams crated—to select the proper NMFC 176450 class within 100–150.
- Control moisture and snagging: line boxes with poly, add desiccants, cap yarn ends, and avoid rough lumber surfaces that can abrade delicate filaments.
- Unitize bags/boxes on standard pallets with corner boards and stretch wrap; keep footprints stackable to protect the yarn and improve handling in LTL networks.
- For wrapped beams in crates, block and brace beams, strap through skids, fill voids, and mark center of gravity; ensure hardware is recessed so it can’t catch the silk.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate sub-class selection under NMFC 176450 curbs reclass fees and keeps quoted LTL rates aligned with invoices.
- Moisture-safe and snag-safe packaging dramatically lowers claim risk on high-value silk, protecting margins and customer relationships.
- Palletized, stackable boxes and well-braced crates improve stowability, enabling better carrier acceptance and potential rate advantages.
- Non-hazardous textile designation broadens carrier options and accelerates booking, reducing lead times for mills and importers.
