How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the commodity as “Sizing, rosin” on the BOL and include NMFC 176560, Class 65. Specify packaging type (drums or dry bags) and pallet count to prevent reclass.
- For drums: palletize upright on sturdy 48x40 pallets, use drum rings/bands and edge protectors, and mark “Do Not Top Stack.” Drum clamps speed loading and reduce damage.
- For dry bags: keep product dry with a slip sheet and top cap, cross-stack bags for stability, and stretch-wrap to the pallet. Avoid damp floors and humid trailers.
- Protect from heat and contamination. Request clean, dry vans and avoid co-loading with strong odors or oils that can taint resin-based materials.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 65 yields predictable LTL pricing, simplifying quoting and bid comparisons for paper mills, adhesives, and chemical distributors.
- Non-hazardous status expands carrier options and typically reduces hazmat-related surcharges and paperwork time.
- Solid palletizing for drums or bags cuts handling touches, lowering OS&D risk and downstream claims costs.
- Clear packaging details on the BOL minimize inspections and reclass fees, helping keep transit times and freight budgets on track.
