How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Protect tips and bundle lengths. Cap sharp ends, band in manageable bundles, and use VCI wrap for steel or a poly liner for wood to control moisture.
- Use boxes or crates as classified. Choose double‑wall cartons with partitions for 12–18 in skewers, or a sturdy wood crate for long metal runs or export loads.
- Palletize tight: standard 48×40, edge boards, top cap, and 4-way entry. Keep nothing protruding, and limit stack pressure to avoid punctures or splintering.
- Document clearly on the BOL: “Skewers, steel or wood, boxed/crated – NMFC 176600, Class 70, non-hazmat,” with carton/crate counts and dimensions. If planning drums, confirm acceptance before tender.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL pricing with fixed Class 70—no density math, faster quotes, fewer reclass surprises.
- One item for steel or wood simplifies catalogs and BOLs, reducing SKU confusion and administrative time.
- Standard box/crate packing speeds dock handling and lowers damage claims from tip punctures or shifting.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and consolidations, helping avoid hazmat fees and delays.
