How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the line item as “Slates, book or school” on the BOL and note the material (natural slate, silicated board, or steel) and framed/unframed status. If shipping a boxed slate set, use the cross‑reference NMFC 176722.
- Prevent breakage with interleaving sheets and edge guards; wrap frames to avoid scuffs. Use VCI paper for steel slates to deter rust and a moisture barrier for natural slate.
- Select packaging by risk: double‑wall boxes for standard pieces, wood crates for long or heavy stacks. Brace contents, fill voids, and secure lids to stop rattle.
- Palletize tightly—no overhang, corner boards, top cap, and stretch wrap. Add ‘Do Not Stack’ cones for fragile stacks. Class is fixed at 70, but record dims and weight for accurate quotes and routing.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: fixed Class 70 reduces reclass risk and stabilizes LTL budgeting for schools, bookstores, and ed‑supply distributors.
- Lower claims and returns: crates, edge protection, and interleaving drastically cut breakage on brittle slate, reducing total landed cost.
- Clean billing: using 176720 for individual slates and 176722 for boxed sets avoids rating disputes, rebills, and audit delays.
- Faster tendering: non‑hazardous status broadens carrier options and simplifies paperwork, speeding pickups and delivery commitments.
