How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the carrier accepts live snails and verify permits (USDA/APHIS or state), then note species and Class 150 on the BOL.
- Use ventilated boxes or sturdy crates with damp liner material; secure lids, prevent leaks, and avoid standing water. Add gel packs or insulation as needed.
- Palletize to prevent crushing, keep upright, and block-and-brace. Apply “Live Animals,” “This Side Up,” and temperature caution labels on multiple sides.
- Plan the route for speed—avoid weekend handoffs, request fast LTL services, and keep live cargo away from chemicals or strong odors.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 150 simplifies quoting and booking, removing density calculations and reducing pricing variance.
- Accurate listing lowers the risk of reclass fees and terminal delays, improving on-time performance for perishable live goods.
- Standard box/crate packaging streamlines pallet planning, reducing handling damage and mortality—protecting product yield for food markets.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and eases carrier onboarding, while solid packaging practices cut claim exposure.
