Notes
Note 177011: NOTE-Articles tendered for shipment on lift truck skids, pallets or platforms must be securely fastened to and must not overhang the edges of the lift truck skid, pallet or platform deck. Exposed surfaces and edges must be protected by packing forms or other packaging materials so as to withstand the normal rigors of the less-than-truckload environment.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the item fits NMFC 177010: PV panels or collectors with or without glass/plastic glazing, absorber plates (see note), and solar water heaters.
- Calculate density for the boxed/package unit. Example: a 48×40×10 in carton at 150 lb ≈ 11.1 cu ft and ~13.5 pcf; use NMFTA tables to select the proper class (range 70–250).
- Package for glass and edge protection: double-wall cartons, foam or honeycomb spacers, corner/edge guards, connector caps, and clear orientation/fragile labels.
- Unitize for handling: place sealed boxes on a pallet with no overhang, add edge protectors, use two straps and stretch wrap, and avoid clamp handling on glazed faces.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-driven classing (six breaks) lets you optimize packing to improve pcf and secure lower LTL freight classes where possible.
- Accurate NMFC 177010 on the BOL reduces reclass/reweigh disputes and unexpected fees, stabilizing your landed cost.
- Damage mitigation—rigid edge protection and internal cushioning—cuts claim rates for glass-front modules and water heaters.
- Non-hazardous category broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, enabling faster tendering and better rates.
