How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match your item to this group: wire spring assemblies, cushion spring grids, or mattress/seat inner fillers. If no specific item applies, use NOI and note the packaging.
- Palletize spring assemblies flat with interleaving corrugate, edge protectors, and a top cap. Band in two directions and cover sharp wire ends with sleeves to prevent puncture damage.
- For bagged or cartoned inner fillers, double-bag heavy-duty poly, add a corrugated shell, and keep everything within the pallet footprint to avoid overhang fees.
- On the BOL, describe as “Spring Assemblies Group, NOI, non-hazardous,” include unit count, packaging type (bagged/cartoned/crated), and do-not-crush handling notes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate group usage reduces reclass and inspection delays, keeping invoices predictable and avoiding surprise reweigh/rebill charges.
- Damage mitigation via capping, edge protection, and wire-end covers lowers OS&D claims and protects margins on bedding and upholstery shipments.
- Efficient stacking of spring grids increases pallet density, cutting cost per unit and improving access to more favorable LTL rate tiers.
- Selecting carriers experienced with bedding and furniture reduces handling touches, improves on-time performance, and shortens lead times to retailers or upholsterers.
