Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
177780.00 With Coiled or Spiral Wire Springs and with wood board base full area of assembly, in boxes, subject to Item 170 and having a density in pounds per cubic foot of:

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Box the assembly with a full-area wood board base supported inside a rigid, double-wall carton; block and brace so the springs cannot shift and protect sharp wire ends from piercing the box.
  2. Weigh the sealed box and measure its outside L × W × H to compute density (lb ÷ cubic feet). Example: 85 lb in 8.0 cu ft equals 10.6 pcf.
  3. Apply Item 170 rules: choose the freight class from the calculated pcf. Print the weight, cube, and pcf on the BOL to prevent reclass.
  4. For multiple boxes, load flat on a pallet with no overhang, strap and wrap securely, and mark This Side Up to protect the wood base from flex damage.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-accurate entries minimize reweighs and reclass fees, directly lowering LTL rates for boxed spring assemblies.
  • Boxed packaging around a full-area wood base cuts impact damage and claims, improving delivered quality and customer satisfaction.
  • Clear Item 170 documentation speeds quotes and pickup approvals, shortening lead time from dock to truck.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and keeps accessorial costs predictable across lanes.
