Notes
Note 177802: NOTE-Also applies on assemblies of coiled wire springs, each spring being enclosed in a cloth pocket, or a series of springs enclosed in a cloth pocket, but each spring separated by stitched partitions.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify fit: ensure the assembly is truly unframed per Note 177802—coiled wire springs laced or clipped together with no border frame.
- Package to prevent snags: lay spring packs flat with corrugated pads top and bottom, bag in heavy poly, and strap crosswise. Add edge guards so coils do not hook other freight.
- Palletize smart: use full-deck pallets with zero overhang, a rigid top cap, and “Do Not Crush” labeling. For loose bundles, tie in two directions and place slip sheets between bundles.
- Document clearly: list “NMFC 177800, Spring Assemblies—Unframed” on the BOL, note piece count and packaging (pallet, crate, bundle), and include photos when quoting to avoid reclass.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct NMFC selection for unframed coiled spring assemblies reduces reweigh, reclass, and surprise accessorials.
- Robust containment cuts claim risk from coil deformation and snags, keeping upholstery and seating production on schedule.
- Bundling and light compression lower cube for better LTL rates without compromising spring integrity or rebound.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and speeds dock handling for just-in-time deliveries.
