How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the commodity as “Door, NOI, boxed” with NMFC 177920 and Class 77.5 on your BOL so carriers rate it correctly.
- Use a heavy-duty corrugated carton with foam edge guards and corner protectors; strap the boxed door to keep the slab from shifting.
- Record outside carton dimensions and weight for quoting, even though the class is fixed; include this on labels and the BOL.
- For multiple doors, keep each unit in its own box, then unitize with stretch wrap or secure to a pallet for handling while keeping the primary packaging as boxes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 77.5 delivers predictable LTL rates and reduces costly reclassification disputes.
- Boxed packaging improves stackability and lowers damage risk, cutting OS&D claims and replacement costs.
- Clear NMFC mapping speeds up quoting and tendering, helping contractors and distributors meet tight project timelines.
- Non-hazardous status expands carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, improving network flexibility and transit times.
