Notes
Note 178022: NOTE-Not applicable on springs constructed of material over 0.49 inch thick; when exceeding 0.49 inch thick, class as springs, steel, other than wire, coiled.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package coils or reels securely: band with steel/plastic strapping, add edge protectors, then shrink-wrap and palletize. Example: coil OD 36 in, two bands, corner boards, on a 40x48 skid.
- Print the BOL with the full line: “Spring steel wire, NMFC 178020, Class 70, non-hazardous.” This prevents reclassification and speeds terminal handling.
- Stabilize round loads so they don’t roll or telescope. Block with chocks, add dunnage between layers, and keep all coils within pallet footprint—no overhang.
- Request no-stack handling if packaging isn’t crush-rated. Use lift points suited for coils (tines through the eye only when properly blocked) to avoid deformation.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 simplifies quoting and budgeting—no density breakpoints to chase, fewer surprise reclass fees.
- Lower claim risk by packaging for round, tensioned loads; fewer damages mean better carrier performance pricing over time.
- Clean NMFC mapping (178020) speeds pickups and reduces terminal touches, improving cycle time for spring manufacturers and metal fabricators.
- Consistent classification enables multi-location standard work—uniform BOL language and packaging specs cut admin time and auditing costs.
