How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Calculate density for each shipment: measure carton cube in cubic feet and divide weight by cube to assign the correct NMFC class 50–400.
  2. Use right-sized boxes with inner dividers for pens, markers, and clipboards; bag small items like tacks or push pins to prevent spill loss.
  3. For mixed SKUs (binders, calendars, file folders), group by similar density and label cartons: “Stationery, NOI – NMFC 179180” with piece count and total weight.
  4. Palletize boxed goods per Item 170: no carton overhang, use corner boards and stretch wrap; avoid loose pieces to reduce crush and reclass risks.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Lower LTL spend by improving pack density—e.g., boosting from 8 pcf (often Class ~100) to 12 pcf (often Class ~85) can cut rates materially.
  • Reduce reweigh/reclass fees by marking NMFC 179180 and recorded density on the BOL and outer cartons.
  • Increase cube efficiency by nesting binders, flat-packing trays, and tight-fitting cartons, enabling fewer pallets per order.
  • Cut damage claims with partitioned cartons and small-parts bagging, keeping desk accessories and writing instruments sale-ready on arrival.
