How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote as a commodity at Class 65 under NMFC 179280; no density rating is needed. Example: 40 bags at 50 lb each or 4 drums at 400 lb each.
- For bagged product, use heavy pallets with a poly liner, corner boards, and full stretch-wrap. Add a top sheet to keep moisture off waxy surfaces.
- For drums, secure bungs/rings, strap to drum pallets, and block/brace. If shipping red oil warm, add absorbent pads and avoid heat exposure en route.
- On the BOL, describe: “Animal stearine/red oil/stearic acid, NOI, not animal fatty acid — NMFC 179280, Class 65.” Attach an SDS for reference (non-haz).
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 65 simplifies rating and reduces costly reclass disputes, helping stabilize LTL quotes and budgets.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat fees and widens carrier options, improving pickup speed and network coverage.
- Bag or drum flexibility lets shippers match supplier packaging, cut handling time, and consolidate loads with other oleochemicals.
- Better containment (lined pallets, secured drums) lowers leak and residue claims, protecting margins and service reliability.
