Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
179290.00 Stearine, inedible, when derived from animal fats, not animal fatty acid, red oil or stearic acid, in bulk in drums 55

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Quote as Class 55 without density. Describe as inedible stearine from animal fats in bulk drums, not stearic acid, red oil, or animal fatty acid.
  2. Palletize four tight-head 55-gallon drums on a 48×48 pallet; use drum rings or cradles, band and stretch wrap, orient bungs up, and mark pallets “INEDIBLE.”
  3. Manage temperature: product may solidify. If loaded warm, note heat needs, consider drum heaters or insulated covers in winter, and only declare no-freeze when contracted.
  4. Provide spec/SDS, drum type (steel or HDPE), net/gross weights, and piece counts. Request liftgate, pallet jack, or no-touch service for safe drum handling.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 55 delivers predictable, lower LTL rates for dense, drum-packed stearine.
  • Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat surcharges and broadens carrier availability.
  • Drum format improves stowability and durability, cutting damages and claim costs.
  • Clear labeling distinct from stearic acid/red oil reduces reclass fees and delays.
