How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose the right pack: double‑wall box with 2 inches of cushioning all around for single wheels, or a compact wood crate for heavier or multi‑unit shipments. Immobilize the hub with foam blocks so the rim can’t shift.
- Protect finishes before padding. Bag the wheel, then use non‑abrasive foam wrap; add corner/rim guards. For leather or wood grain, include a slip sheet and desiccant to prevent scuffs and moisture marks.
- Palletize smartly. Keep cartons inside the pallet footprint, band gently, and stretch‑wrap. For crates, use four‑way strapping; never let straps bear directly on the rim. Add a ‘Do Not Stack’ cone for LTL.
- On the BOL, list “Steering Wheels, NOI,” note Class 110, packaging (box or crate), and accurate piece count. Mark cartons as fragile and indicate orientation arrows for handlers.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating with fixed Class 110—no density math, faster quotes, and cleaner audits.
- Lower risk of reclass and billing disputes by matching the exact NOI description and approved packaging.
- Flexible protection choices: boxes for cost‑efficient standard moves, crates for premium or high‑value wheels—fewer claims and returns.
- Operational speed: standardized specs let teams onboard vendors quickly and improve carrier acceptance on mixed LTL lanes.
