How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm scope: straps made of leather, imitation leather, or webbing fitted with buckles, hooks, or similar fasteners. Use the exact NOI wording and cite NMFC 179580 on the BOL.
- Pack in sturdy boxes or crated: coil straps to avoid kinks, bag metal hardware to prevent carton punctures, and use dividers or wrap to stop abrasion. Example: bundle 10 pieces, sleeve buckles, fill voids, then seal with reinforced tape.
- Palletize smartly: no overhang, evenly stack cartons, and use corner boards with stretch wrap or banding. If using a crate, block and brace so hardware faces inward and cannot migrate.
- Control moisture and rub: line cartons with poly for leather to limit dye transfer and humidity, add desiccant as needed, and mark cartons with piece count, strap lengths, and “This Side Up.”
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 100 without density calculations streamlines quoting and avoids surprises across mixed strap SKUs.
- Lower reclass risk: correct NOI description and proper boxing/crating help carriers verify the item quickly, reducing fees and delays.
- Fewer damage claims: protecting buckles/hooks and isolating strap surfaces cuts abrasion and puncture issues, improving delivery performance.
- Operational simplicity: one NMFC covers leather, imitation leather, and webbing straps with fasteners, simplifying TMS mapping and consolidations.
