How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Print NMFC 179640 and Class 60 on the BOL, and note whether the load is bagged, boxed, or drummed to prevent carrier reclass.
- Control moisture: line pallets with slip sheets, stretch-wrap bagged pulp, and seal drum lids tightly (e.g., 50‑lb paper bags over plastic liners).
- Palletize evenly and brace: interlock cartons, band drums, add corner boards, and favor 48x40 pallets for smoother cross-dock handling.
- Quote using fixed Class 60; share total weight and piece counts even though density isn’t needed for classification.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: fixed Class 60 simplifies rating and can lower LTL spend versus variable-density items.
- Fewer fees: non-hazardous status reduces compliance steps and eliminates hazmat surcharges.
- Operational efficiency: standard bags/boxes/drums speed dock workflows and cut damage claims for mills and converters.
- Better procurement: consistent classification strengthens rate negotiations and multi-lane bids in fiber supply chains.
