How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 179735 and Class 85 on the BOL; this item is a fixed class and does not require density calculations.
- Pack studs inside heavy poly bags or small inner cartons, then place in double-wall corrugated boxes to contain loose metal pieces and prevent punctures.
- Palletize boxed studs tightly with corner boards and full stretch-wrap; add a top sheet to keep small cartons from shifting during LTL handling.
- Use clear product descriptions such as “steel/tungsten carbide tire studs in boxes,” include box counts and weights, and mark as non-hazardous for faster processing.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating at Class 85 streamlines quoting and reduces reclass risk on inspection.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and simplifies carrier acceptance.
- Dense, compact cartons allow efficient pallet builds, lowering freight cost per stud for tire shops and fleet service centers.
- Packaging aligned with the NMFC listing (boxed) minimizes damage claims and keeps transit times reliable.
