How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose packaging by flow and volume: lined boxes for smaller lots, multiwall bags on pallets for bulk, or fiber/plastic drums with tight lids to minimize dust.
- Guard against moisture—arabinogalactan is hygroscopic. Use poly liners, stretch wrap with top sheets, and desiccant packs when transiting humid lanes.
- Label clearly on pallets and BOL: “Wood Sugar (Arabinogalactan), NMFC 179870, Class 70” to prevent confusion with table sugar and to speed carrier rating.
- Plan stacking and segregation: keep away from liquids and odor sources; cap pallet height near 48 in. Example: forty 50‑lb bags per pallet (2,000 lb) still rates Class 70.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable spend: fixed Class 70 simplifies quoting and avoids density disputes, improving rate consistency across carriers.
- Lower risk fees: non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and reduces accessorial exposure compared with regulated chemicals.
- Packaging flexibility—bags, boxes, or drums—lets you align with production lines and consolidate SKUs without changing the freight class.
- Fewer claims with moisture control and stable packaging boosts on-time delivery for nutraceutical, food ingredient, and specialty chemical customers.
