How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use sturdy corrugated boxes with interior padding to prevent brittle sulfur candles or strips from chipping; keep wicks covered and mark cartons “Keep Dry.”
- Palletize cartons upright on a 48x40 pallet with no overhang; add corner boards and 3–4 wraps of stretch film for stack stability.
- State on the BOL: “Sulfur Candles or Strips, boxed — NMFC 179920 — Class 70, Non-Haz.” to avoid reclass and speed up carrier inspections.
- Avoid loading near odor-sensitive goods (coffee, tea, spices). Request dry, clean trailers and keep cartons away from moisture sources.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 eliminates density calculations, reducing reclass disputes and audit delays.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and expands carrier options for LTL.
- Boxed packaging improves cube efficiency and lowers claim risk compared to loose packs.
- One consistent NMFC for greenhouse, cooperage, and beekeeping uses simplifies quoting across seasonal demand.
