How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select leak-tight packaging: double-lined corrugated boxes with poly liners, or tight-head pails/drums. Leave headspace to limit seepage when product warms.
- Manage heat exposure. Load early or use insulated/temperature-controlled service in hot weather to keep tallow semi-solid and prevent odor or leakage claims.
- Palletize carefully: line pallets with absorbent sheets or trays, keep pails upright, band and stretch-wrap, and mark Do Not Double Stack if cartons are soft.
- On the BOL, state NMFC 180560, Class 65, piece count and packaging (boxes/drums/pails). Note any temperature handling requests and stack limits.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 65 rating (no density required) speeds quoting and cuts reclass or rebill risks.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and specialized paperwork, broadening carrier selection.
- Packaging flexibility—boxes, drums, or pails—lets you right-size shipments and control container and dunnage costs.
- Tight containment reduces OS&D and cleanup claims, protecting margins and service KPIs with your buyers.
