How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List “Fiber, chemically hardened tanks (empty)” with NMFC 181090 on the BOL; note FRP/gelcoat construction and confirm the tank is clean and dry.
- Support the cylinder in cradles or V‑blocks and band to skids; add foam and edge guards to protect the gelcoat; use a full or skeleton crate and mark Do Not Stack.
- Stabilize irregular bottoms with wide-base pallets and blocking; label the center of gravity and secure against rolling or lateral shift during LTL handling.
- Measure fitting-to-fitting length and largest OD (e.g., 72 in dia x 96 in long); remove protruding nozzles where possible to reduce cube, and include photos for carrier review.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC tagging for FRP tanks reduces reclass and surprise invoice risk on light-but-bulky freight.
- Proper cradling and gelcoat protection lower damage rates and costly repair claims, preserving delivery timelines.
- Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and speeds tendering compared with tanks that contain residue.
- Documented dimensions and packaging details yield better LTL or volume quotes and avoid cubic-capacity and linear-foot penalties.
