How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Declare NMFC 181370 at tender, noting Class 100 with no density requirement, and provide accurate piece count, weight, and dimensions for quoting.
- Protect the rubber liner: cap all nozzles, use clean non-abrasive dunnage, and wrap flanges to prevent grit or edge damage during transit.
- Support tanks on cradles or saddles and strap with softeners; for example, a horizontal 5,000-gallon tank rides on timber saddles with nylon straps and edge guards.
- If the tank was in service, certify it is cleaned, dried, and vented; residue can compromise the liner and may trigger carrier refusals or cleaning fees.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 100 rating reduces reclass charges and minimizes invoice disputes.
- Non-hazardous status expands carrier options and helps avoid hazmat accessorials.
- Proper liner protection and stable supports lower damage claims and downtime, preserving high-cost rubber linings.
- Single-item NMFC simplifies TMS setup and speeds quoting, auditing, and routing decisions.
