How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. List the full description on the BOL: “Tanks, iron or steel, NOI, plate or sheet, KD — Class 50” to prevent reclass and billing delays.
  2. Bundle plate or sheet sections tightly with steel banding and edge guards; palletize for forklift tines on all sides. Example: 48×96-inch panels stacked five-high on 2×4 skids.
  3. Protect against corrosion and abrasion with VCI paper, oil film, or poly wrap. Use corner boards for curved plates and cap any protruding nozzles or flanges.
  4. Keep hardware bagged and contained. Mark crates or bundles “KD” and show piece count so terminals can stack safely and avoid loose parts in transit.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable pricing: fixed Class 50 removes density disputes and reduces the risk of costly reclass charges.
  • KD format minimizes cube and improves stackability, enabling more components per skid and lower LTL spend.
  • Damage mitigation from edge protection and bundling leads to fewer claims, steadier lead times, and stronger vendor performance.
  • Non-hazmat status streamlines tendering and carrier selection, enabling faster quotes and simpler documentation.
