How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the full commodity on the BOL: “Steel or Terne Plate, rubber covered, in boxes or crates — NMFC 181660, Class 85” to prevent reclass or inspection holds.
- Use rigid boxes or fully enclosed wood crates with blocking and edge protectors. Keep plates flat and secured to prevent flexing that could shear the rubber cover.
- Protect the rubber surface: interleave non-abrasive sheets, wrap the stack, then strap over corner guards. Avoid direct metal banding on the rubber.
- Control moisture and handling: add desiccant/VCI paper inside the crate, label Do Not Stack and This Side Up, and record exterior dimensions for carrier planning even though class is fixed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL costs: a fixed Class 85 eliminates density calculations, speeding up quotes and reducing rating disputes.
- Lower damage risk: boxed/crated packaging protects edges and rubber covering, cutting claims and replacement costs.
- Fewer exceptions: non-hazardous materials are widely accepted by carriers, reducing delays tied to special handling or approvals.
- Avoid reclass fees: meeting the “in boxes or crates” requirement keeps the shipment compliant and prevents accessorials or refused pickups.
