How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 181790, Class 175 on the BOL and select sturdy boxes or crates suited to the tank material and size.
- Drain and dry the system; cap all lines. Pack pumps, filters, chillers, lamps, and hardware separately inside the container with foam blocking.
- Shield glass or acrylic with corner guards and rigid panels, then add internal bracing. Mark This Side Up and No Stack to protect the refrigerating unit.
- Strap boxed or crated tanks to a pallet for forklift access; keep the center of gravity low and prevent movement with bands or stretch-wrap.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 175 provides predictable rating and lowers reclass risk for aquariums and marine culture sets.
- Proper crating and internal bracing reduce damage claims on fragile glass/acrylic and refrigeration components.
- Bundling tank, pump, filter, and chiller under one NMFC streamlines billing and avoids mixed-class surprises.
- Non-hazardous status speeds tendering and paperwork for seafood retailers, public aquariums, labs, and installers.
