How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Calculate density before tendering: weigh each box and divide by its cubic feet to select the correct class within 50–400 (e.g., 40 lb ÷ 3.2 cu ft = 12.5 PCF).
  2. Pack rolls to prevent telescoping and edge damage: use dividers or snug inner packs, bag rolls to keep adhesive clean, and choose 32 ECT cartons for light cases or 44 ECT+ for heavier loads.
  3. Palletize for stability: keep boxes square with no overhang, cross-stack, add corner boards, then strap and stretch-wrap. Mark arrows if rolls must stay upright.
  4. Comply with Item 170: use strong closures, protect from heat or cold that can affect adhesive, and list accurate weights on the BOL to avoid reweigh and reclass fees.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-driven classing lets you improve pack-out and potentially land a lower class within the 50–400 range, cutting LTL rates.
  • Standard boxed packaging streamlines handling and stackability, reducing accessorials and speeding cross-dock moves.
  • Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and documentation, simplifying tendering and reducing administrative overhead.
  • Accurate weights and packaging per Item 170 lower the risk of reweigh/reclass charges and minimize damage claims on tape rolls.
